John, I wish it were that easy! It's a little like asking for the "Torres Plans" - no two were alike. JG Stauffer had a 53 year career filled with prolific output and experimentation - so you kind of need to pick a specific instrument or blend several together that you find attractive or interesting. Lots of people built in that style - basically an entire Viennese school of builders. His son Johann Anton, his most famous pupils CF Martin, Heinrich Schatz, Anton Fischer, Franz Schmidt, etc, etc. Dozens of imitators throughout eastern Europe and Russia. That said, Stauffer's instruments were small by our standards - generally the size of a Martin 2, 2 1/2, 3. Scale lengths vary, he used a range from 580-625mm. Over time he incoporated a wide variety of patented features, so it's really a matter of picking and choosing. He's the one builder most responsible for bringing the guitar into the modern era - really an overlooked genius. Naturally, he died penniless in a debtors hospital. Ian Watchorn is the leading expert on all this, and has done some fantastic research and published a number of articles. The only thing I found approaching a plan is "#48 Russian 7 String Guitar" by the GAL. Not a Stauffer, but it has the basic body shape and some of the features are detailed. Steve |

Sorry, John. No Stauffers here. Did you get the L-00 tracing yet?? Call me when you get it and let me verifiy the brace dimensions etc. BTW, I don't think I ever mentioned that I got the case and it is perfect for what I needed. |

Here is a site that everyone ought to check out. It has plans available for numerous old guitars. Best, you can download them for free. Worst, text is Japanese but the measurements are clear. Plans for you |

Steve[/QUOTE] Thanks for Ian's name. The Legnani guitar is the guitar style I was referring to (in my head). But I'm also very struck by the Lacote guitars and the link Don gave had a RF Lacote plan. Beautiful guitar for sure. http://www.crane.gr.jp/CRANE_etc/A004_Lacote_1839/P003877.jp g Is that just engraved and dyed? |
